Shorts get bought one pair at a time, on impulse, and end up as a drawer of near-identical navy cotton. Treated as a small system instead, a hot-weather wardrobe stops being a daily decision. The LitBuy Spreadsheet Pants tab, home to most LitBuy Pants picks, sorts bottoms by fabric and cut, so most of the work is choosing lengths and materials that cover every temperature you actually live in.
Pick an inseam, not a size
Inseam changes an outfit more than the waist measurement does. Measure from the crotch seam to the hem on a pair you already like, then match the number below. Add 2 cm if you sit for a living and want no thigh contact with the seat; take 2 cm off if you are under 170 cm and want the hem to land above the knee.
| Inseam | Look | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 5 inch | Athletic, mid-thigh | Sport, beach, quick errands |
| 7 inch | Standard casual | Everyday summer, most builds |
| 9 inch | Just above the knee | Court, streetwear, taller frames |
| 11 inch | Long, near-knee | Coverage, wide legs, conservative fits |
The 7 to 9 inch jump is the one people underestimate. Roughly 5 cm of extra leg moves the silhouette from casual to sporty, and the same shirt will read two different ways with each.
Fabrics that survive 35 degrees
Cotton twill is the default and it is fine to about 28 degrees. Past that it holds sweat and clings. Rotate in three alternatives.
- Linen blends: 55/45 linen-cotton breathes without the full wrinkle. Expect 2 percent shrinkage after the first wash, so buy true waist.
- Lightweight nylon: 70 to 90 gsm ripstop dries in under 20 minutes and packs to fist size. Best for travel, worst for sitting on hot plastic.
- Seersucker and open weave cotton: textured weaves hold fabric off the skin, which is the single biggest comfort gain in humid heat.
Long trousers matter too, and the weekly finds page tracks restocks on the lightweight versions when they land again.
Swim-to-street crossover
A hybrid short earns its place if it dries fast and has a real pocket. Check three details before ordering: a liner that does not bunch, a zip or velcro rear pocket that will not spill a phone, and a fabric that stays opaque when wet. Hold it up to a light in the QC photos, because that is what the warehouse shots are for. Drawstring-only waists look wrong with a tucked shirt; a short elastic panel at the back with a flat front reads as ordinary shorts.
Packing three weeks into a carry-on
Two pairs of shorts, one long pant, one swim short that doubles as gym wear. Roll rather than fold, put the heaviest fabric at the bottom, and stay on dark nylon plus mid-grey cotton, which covers the most outfits per gram. Wash one pair every third night: 15 minutes in cold water with a drop of detergent, roll in a towel, hang overnight.
FAQ
What inseam suits short legs?
5 or 7 inch, hemmed just above the knee. A 9 inch short on a 165 cm frame swallows the leg.
Do linen shorts stretch out during the day?
About half a size. Buy your true waist and let the fabric relax into it.
Are swim shorts acceptable as street shorts?
With a liner, a real pocket and no loud print, yes. Otherwise keep them for water.
Shorts are one half of a summer haul. Footwear is the other, and the sneaker notes cover it, while the starter guide covers the ordering flow. For the full list, browse the LitBuy Spreadsheet home page or jump straight to the main sheet and the pants category. New guides land on the home page first.
